A simple routine for acne-prone skin
Oily skin needs balance, not punishment. Over-cleansing and harsh scrubs often make breakouts worse.
Acne-prone skin produces more sebum, and pores clog more easily. The aim of a routine is to clean without stripping, to regulate oil, and to keep the skin moisturised and protected.
Morning
- Cleanse with a gentle, sebum-regulating gel.
- Treat with a light serum on the areas that break out.
- Moisturise with a non-comedogenic cream. Skipping moisturiser can push the skin to produce even more oil.
- Protect with an SPF 50+ sunscreen made for acne-prone skin. Sun can darken the marks that blemishes leave behind.
Evening
- Cleanse again to remove sunscreen, make-up and the day's oil.
- Apply serum, then moisturiser.
Good habits
Do not squeeze spots, which can lead to marks and scars. Change pillowcases often, keep phones clean, and choose make-up labelled non-comedogenic. Give a new routine four to eight weeks before judging the results.
If acne is painful, deep, leaves scars, or does not improve, see a dermatologist. Effective medical treatments are available.
